After tying their opening game against Reading 4-4 on Saturday during Columbus Day weekend, the girl's stormed back to win all 3 games on Sunday, against Nashua (3-1), Chelmsford (3-1) and Walpole (3-1) respectively. On championship Monday, the girl's once again faced the Panthers of Nashua in what became one of the most exciting games in Melrose girl's hockey history. The game was tied 1-1 going into the 3rd period when the Panthers struck and tallied their second goal with only 2:47 left to go. Undaunted, Coach Scott
Giordano and the team gathered themselves together. With a calculated
risk, Coach Giordano pulled the goal- tender with only about a minute
remaining. The risk paid off as Melrose scored their second goal to tie
with only 23 seconds left in the period. The time ticked down and the
buzzer sounded sending the game into over-time. Four exhausting over-time
periods and many opportunities later, Melrose's Makayla Lucey streaked
across the middle of the ice and buried the puck into the back of the
Panther's net sending the Melrose fan's, teammate's and coach's into a
well deserved celebration. |
